Three Things Every Business Owner Needs to Succeed

The Three Essentials Every Business Owner Needs
Someone recently asked this question on FB: "What are the three things that every business owner needs?" Reading through the answers online, I realized that my answers tended to be pretty different from most. Today, I want to share the three things that I think are MOST essential to business that can significantly impact long-term success.

The Power of Outside Voices
One of THE key elements for business success is having outside voices—other people in your world who serve as your personal board of directors. These are mentors or coaches, and also trusted friends and colleagues who provide the important mix of encouragement and constructive criticism.
But why exactly do these outside voices really matter?
- Support and Accountability: Surrounding yourself with people who believe in your potential boots your confidence and keep you accountable – even when you’re not sure about what you’re doing, they will be. These people see the best in you and help you navigate the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship knowing you, your capabilities, and your goals (but without your doubts!).
- Honest Feedback: A good support system isn't afraid to call you out on your nonsense. This dual role of supporter and challenger is vital for growth.
- Learning from Others: Talking with your people about your ideas allows you to share experiences, strategies, and insights that can lead to more effective decision-making.
Embrace Blank Space
In the busy day to day that is running a business AND having a life, it's easy to overlook the need for time to think. Creating blank space in your calendar – where your only task is to pause and think - is essential for reflection and creativity.
So why do we *really* need blank space?
- Reflection Time: The most successful business owners are successful over time because they find a way to create thinking time for themselves—whether it's a quiet day at home or a weekend retreat. This space allows ideas to surface and problems to be solved without the rush of day to day.
- Avoid Burnout: Regularly stepping back helps prevent overwhelm and keeps your motivation intact. Even a short break – a 10 minute walk, a 30 minute tv break, or 20 minutes on the phone with a friend - can lead to significant breakthroughs.
- Recharge Your Creativity: Just like returning from a vacation, giving your mind a break can lead to fresh ideas and perspectives that can enhance your business strategy.
Reconnect with Your "Why"
Having quick and simple methods to reconnect with your purpose is another key to sustaining motivation and direction in business.
What are some simple ways to reconnect?
- Daily Mantras: Choose a handful of phrases that remind you of your core mission. For example, my favorite reminders include “I am here to be useful” and “I am a powerful creator.” These affirmations can guide you back to your purpose when you feel lost.
- Journaling: Using your journal on a regular basis helps clarify your thoughts and reinforce your goals. Regularly reviewing your reasons for starting your business can re-energize your efforts.
- Accountability: Share your “why” with your outside voices to keep you accountable. They can help remind you of your purpose during challenging times.
Conclusion: Your Next Steps
By prioritizing outside voices, embracing blank space for reflection, and consistently reconnecting with your “why,” you can navigate the entrepreneurial journey more effectively – success gets simpler to both reach and hang onto when we have support, time to think, and a way to remember who we are and why we are in business in the first place.
